Cases mediated
in this program include (but are not limited to):
• Landlord/Tenant
• Consumer/Merchant
• Neighbor Disputes
• Employer/Employee
Typically,
cases in this program, if unresolved in mediation, will be filed
in JP Court or the client will be referred to a more appropriate
agency.
To
schedule a mediation in this program, a client should call the
DRC at (713) 755-8274 and speak with a case manager or print,
fill out and send in the Request for a Community Based
Mediation form.
The case manager will determine the appropriateness of
the dispute for mediation.
The client will either be referred to another social,
legal, or governmental agency at this time (if mediation is
inappropriate) or asked to come to the DRC in person to complete
the necessary paperwork to schedule a mediation.
The
personal intake interview lasts approximately 20 minutes and the
case manager will explain the mediation process to the client.
Additional referral information will be provided at that
time.
Mediations
are scheduled in a week to ten days from intake and all parties
are notified of the scheduled mediation by mail.
Mediations
in this program are usually conducted in the evenings (Monday
through Thursday) starting at 6:00 PM, 6:30 PM, or 7:00 PM.
Mediations are conducted at the DRC offices at 49 San
Jacinto, Suite 220. Mediations
can also be conducted during business hours, if more convenient
for the parties.
The
DRC also provides mediation services at a number of JP courts.
Mediation at these courts is provided on the day of
trial.
The
DRC provides these services in English and Spanish.
