JOB TITLE: Zoonosis Veterinarian*

EDUCATIONEXPERIENCE: A Doctorate degree in Veterinary Medicine from an accredited veterinary school is required. A Master’s degree in Public Health and two years of work experience in veterinary science, epidemiology, zoonosis investigation or related field OR Five years of work experience in the fields stated above is required.
JOB SKILLS: Must be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Texas. Knowledge of zoonotic disease symptoms and transmission is necessary. Must be proficient in using Microsoft Word, Access, Excel and PowerPoint. Successful candidate must be comfortable speaking to groups of people and communicate effectively in oral and written form.
JOB DESCRIPTION: Develops and implements a veterinary surveillance system to aid in the early detection of zoonotic diseases. Maintains a working network of veterinarians in the Houston/Harris County region. Works with various stakeholders in the Houston/Harris County region to develop, implement and evaluate the surveillance/reporting system. Develops a web-based reporting system. Maintains an active presence in the veterinary community to insure acceptance and participation in the program (i.e., speak at group meetings, act as a consultant, and distribute a newsletter) etc. Coordinates/carries-out active zoonotic surveillance as needed in Harris County with local, state and federal agencies. Provides guidance to the Office of Policy and Planning concerning pandemic flu and zoonotic diseases. Provides guidance and assistance to the Office of Public Health Preparedness in planning/responding to disasters involving zoonotic diseases. Serves on the Harris County Disaster Animal Management Task Force and assists in planning for animals during disasters. Responsible for the recruitment, selection, training, supervision, evaluation and discipline of the Zoonosis Technician. Participates in analyzing divisional needs, develops policies and strategic plans in coordination with other section leaders. Assists in the development of the divisional budget, resource priorities, and developing public health preparedness grant budget priorities as requested. Serves as consultant to the public and medical community concerning rabies and other zoonotic disease. Performs other duties as assigned; including tasks involved in responding to an emergency event.
