JOB TITLE:              Insecticide Resistance Management Entomologist

 

DEPARTMENT:      Public Health & Environmental Services

                                    Mosquito Control

 

HOURS:                     7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.  / Monday - Friday

 

SALARY:                  Will Be Discussed During Departmental Interview

                                    Based on 26 Pay Periods

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:  A M.S. degree in Entomology and two years of experience in mosquito control/ecology OR A Ph.D. and one year of related experience is required. A Ph.D. degree in Entomology is preferred. Two years of demonstrated experience working directly with analyses of entomological or similar biological data is also required.

 

JOB SKILLS: Must obtain a Texas Department of State Health Services Pesticide Applicator’s Certification within six months of employment.  Must possess proficiency in using Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.  Proficiency in Microsoft Access, SPSS, SAS, and/or Jump (JMP) is preferred.  Strong oral and written communication skills are required.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION: Conducts insecticide resistance bioassays following published protocols.   Collects data on mosquito mortality; constructs and maintains bioassay database.  Maintains clean laboratory working environment.  Performs duties using appropriate personal proactive measures.  Manages logistic required of bioassays, to include ordering and inventory of chemicals, vials, PPM expendable supplies, etc.  Supervises seasonal employees involved in laboratory bioassay testing and related activities according to the Harris County Public Health and Environmental Services policies and procedures.  Conducts statistical analyses to identify mosquito control areas with resistant insect populations.  Evaluates association between field cage and vial bioassay studies to develop accurate screening test for suspect mosquito populations.  Compares different insecticide resistance bioassays using inferential statistical methods.  Routinely updates senior management with findings, and presents results in professional meetings/scientific literature.  Identifies MCA in need of insecticide resistance testing through coordination with the Test and Evaluation Section and Field Operations Branch activities.  Collects mosquito eggs, larvae, and/or adult adults as required.  Maintains insects using established insectary protocols.  Ensures proper collection and correct identification of mosquito samples.  Serves as liaison to other mosquito control programs within Harris County.  Performs other duties as assigned; including special tasks involved in responding to an emergency event.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Position requires lifting 50 pounds and working under hot and humid conditions.
