JOB TITLE: Trainer/Lab Specialist

HOURS: 40 Hours Per Week / Monday - Friday
Some Evenings & Saturdays As Needed
SALARY: Will Be Discussed During Departmental Interview
Plus Mileage Reimbursement
Based on 26 Pay Periods
EDUCATION: Diploma from an accredited school of vocational nursing is required.
EXPERIENCE: One year of experience providing direct patient care or working in a public-health related area is preferred. Phlebotomy experience with pediatric and/or adult populations is also preferred. Training experience and experience working in a laboratory setting is preferred, but not required.
JOB SKILLS: Must be currently licensed to practice as a Vocational Nurse by the Texas Board of Nursing. A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for travel among WIC locations is required. Basic skills in Microsoft Windows, Outlook and Word are required. Good oral and written communication skills are required. Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred.
JOB DESCRIPTION: Provides and/or coordinates in-service training to WIC staff relating to anthropometrics and immunizations. Evaluates staff performing hemoglobin/hematocrit and anthropometrics functions and restrains WIC staff as needed. Coordinates hemoglobin/hematocrit audits, observes other clinical procedures such as heights/weights, reviews findings and implements corrective actions where needed. Monitors laboratory and infection control procedures and implements corrective action as needed. Works as a Certifying Authority when needed to determine applicant eligibility at various WIC sites including, but not limited to performing income/residency screening, dietary recall/assessment, assignment of risk codes, individual counseling, food package and formula issuance and non-contract formula approval. Provides nutrition education to WIC participants either individually or in groups as needed. Conducts the Infection Control and Blood-Borne Pathogens and Hazardous Communications training. Assists with training and orientation of new employees. Presents in-service training at staff meetings and conducts other training as assigned. Participates on the Harris County Public Health & Environmental Services committees and strategic planning groups focused on infection control, Texas Department of State Health Services QA, employee health immunizations and staff development. Maintains and reviews reports of employee/client injuries occurring at WIC sites. Performs other duties as assigned, including special tasks involved in responding to an emergency event.
