JOB TITLE: Fire / Arson Investigator

SALARY: $3,505.00 -$5,864.00 Per Month

Based on 26 Pay Periods
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS: High school diploma of G.E.D. equivalent is required. An Associate degree in Fire Protection Technology, Law Enforcement, or related field is preferred. Additional years of experience in fire/arson investigation may be substituted for a degree. Must have a minimum of three years of fire service or law enforcement experience in a metropolitan area with similar fire hazards and risks. Experience working with volunteer or combination fire departments is preferred. Must have a valid Texas driver's license. At the time of appointment, must be certified by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) as a Basic Arson Investigator and by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCLEOSE) as a Basic Peace Officer. TCFP Basic Firefighter, Inspector and Instructor Certifications are preferred. Must have a working knowledge of State Laws pertaining to fire/arson investigations, including the Texas Local Government Code, Texas Penal Code, Texas Family Code, Code of Criminal Procedure and applicable standards published by NFPA, TCFP, TCLEOSE, and others. Good oral and written communication skills, with a basic knowledge of MS Office and other job-related software are required. Effective interpersonal and time management skills are desired. Bilingual communication skills (English/Spanish) are highly desired.
JOB DESCRIPTION: Properly investigates the origin, cause and circumstances of fires and explosions as assigned. Documents the scene, records facts, obtains evidence, develops and interviews witnesses, and completes required tasks on time. When there is evidence of an incendiary cause, prepares and presents the case to the District Attorney. Works well under the supervision of senior team members and as a part of an incident command team organization. Must be able to walk, stoop, bend, sit, climbs stairs/ladders, and craw, with moderate to heavy dragging or lifting, possibly with full protective clothing and SCBA. Requires to 15% out-of-town travel with occasional overnight stays. Performs other tasks as assigned by management.
