The Seniors Garden Program began
in 2002 with Tom Bass Community Center as its premier site. The
program is led by a Harris County Employee from the
Horticultural Department. The purpose of the garden program is
to teach seniors various gardening principles.
Seniors have the opportunity for hands on training which
include, plant propagation projects such as growing plants from
cuttings, air layering, bulbs, and many more. In the garden,
seniors partake in planting, raising, and harvesting spring and
fall vegetables. Every other month a field trip is planned and
the group visits different gardens in the Houston and
surrounding areas to get new ideas from the various garden
designs and to learn about different plants with a special
interest in those that do best in the Texas landscape. Please
click on community center’s activities for
more information. |
