 In
1987, Commissioner El Franco Lee created the ever popular Harris
County Precinct One Street Olympics Program (Street Olympics).
Since its inception, it has grown from a summer only
recreational program to include four major components that
address the social service, health care, educational and
vocational needs of Harris County youth.
18th Annual
Summer Programs for Kids
.
Working in concert with the Street Olympics
Summer Games, the Northeast
Adolescent Program seeks to address health issues for area
youth through education and intervention. The Harris
County Aquatics Program provides
recreational and valuable specialized training for future
swimmers.
The Discovery Camp Nature Program
is the fourth component of Street Olympics and provides children
with hands-on-education and orientation to natural and
environmental experiences.
Together, these four programs represent a comprehensive
community-based venture that is funded through the joint efforts
of private and public community agencies. Street Olympics
operates under the direction of its Board of Directors who
oversee the financial and operational functions of the
organization.

 Founded
in 1987, the Street Olympics Summer Games (Summer Games) have
grown to be one of the most popular events of the summer.
The program was designed to provide organized athletic activity
centered around games that young people traditionally play on
the streets. These same games were then organized into
positive, rewarding Olympic-style competition.
Each year, the Street Olympics prepares for an exciting summer
that will allow thousands of Harris County youth to learn new
skills while competing in a safe, fun-filled environment. To
enter the Summer Games, a girl or boy must be between the ages
of six and fifteen as of August 3 and registered with one of the
sponsoring agencies. For a list of these agencies, call

Bright Futures

The Bright
Futures Fair is fun, exciting and educational. It is a unique and creative opportunity for the youth of Harris
County to learn more about health, safety, and careers with bright futures in a fun-filled atmosphere.
This major component of the Street Olympics' Summer Games utilizes exciting, interactive booths and other activities to
emphasize the importance of education, preventive health care, and personal safety.
The Fair targets children, ages six to fifteen and helps them visualize that they too can have bright futures. Our
professional volunteers guide them through this learning process and help them learn that their Bright Futures start now.
Each year this event is held in conjunction with the Harris County Street Olympics Final Event, during the first week of August.

Aquatics Program

Beginning in 1992, Commissioner Lee instituted the Harris County
Aquatics Program to develop valuable leadership and teamwork skills
for youth through swimming. Through teaching the sport of
swimming and also in providing opportunities for competition, the
Aquatics Program instills discipline and teamwork, while also
providing instruction in a lifetime sport. The program is
growing each year, and its award winning team, the Mighty Dolphins,
has successfully competed in numerous local and national swim meets
across the USA. Check out the Spring 2004 Learn-to-Swim
Locations.

educational activities, games, crafts and projects, the youth can
attain a greater understanding of living creatures and their roles in
preserving the environment. During the school year, the
Discovery Camp converts to the Traveling Naturalist Program.
