The G.R.E.A.T. Program is a school-based, law enforcement officer-instructed
classroom curriculum. The program's primary objective is prevention and is
intended as an immunization against delinquency, youth violence, and gang
membership. G.R.E.A.T. lessons focus on providing life skills to students to
help them avoid delinquent behavior and violence to solve problems. The
G.R.E.A.T. Program consists of four components: a 13-week middle school
curriculum, an elementary school curriculum, a summer program, and families
training.
G.R.E.A.T. Summer Program
Each summer since 2005, Constable Walker has provided summer fun for thousands
of Precinct 7 youth; this summer is no different. Walker says, “The G.R.E.A.T.
summer program gives children both the opportunity to enhance their social
skills and provide alternatives to negative street activity, while giving some
structure to their summer months.”
Middle school children, between the ages of 11-13 years of age,
reap the benefits of this program. The aim of this highly structured
program is to curb gang activity. Interpersonal communications, conflict
resolution, goal setting, decision making and creating a healthy self image,
are only a few of the areas explored during the six hour day.

This unit provides support to deputies, who perform vehicle patrols. The
Bicycle Unit also provides patrols to the Precinct’s walking and hiking trials
along our bayou areas and parks.
If you are a biking enthusiast, here are a few helpful tips to prevent bicycle
theft:
-
Never allow a stranger to ride your bike even if the person promises to just go
a short distance; they may never come back with your bike.
-
Lock your bike, even if it will be left unattended just for a few minutes.
-
Use a high quality hardened steel U-shaped lock. Please avoid flimsy locks that
can be easily broken or cut.
-
Record your bike’s serial number, keep your sales receipt, photograph your bike
and keep all of this in a safe place.
We want you to be safe when riding a bicycle.
