The HCIFS Administrative Office is divided into several sections. The Business Office takes and receives requests for copies of autopsy reports and advises the public of report completion and availability. The Death Certificate Section is responsible for processing death certificates within the guidelines set by the Bureau of Vital Statistics of Texas for every decedent examined by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences. This department also processes requests for the issuance of cremation waivers.

The HCIFS Family Liaison Team was developed to assist family members of the decedent with understanding the role and process of the Institute of Forensic Sciences while clarifying issues of concern. This service is achieved through the maintenance of a detailed database that provides prompt availability of information to decedent family members. It is the goal of this section to gather all data regarding the decedent, including questions from the family and results of tests, in an effort to provide accurate information to families. The HCIFS Family Liaison Team understands the importance of clear communication between doctors and family members and strives to provide this unique service.

| Court Coordination and Records | Top |
The court coordinator schedules and maintains court case information for the forensic pathologists and maintains all records for the HCIFS Office. An active line of communication between the court coordinator and attorney offices concerning court testimony and/or depositions is crucial in this section. This section of the HCIFS also provides records management services. The records custodians are responsible for the maintenance of all case-related information. This information is maintained in accordance with the State of Texas Library Services Retention Schedule as well as the requirements of the National Association of Medical Examiners. |

The Transcription Section transcribes all autopsy reports dictated by the forensic pathologists. The transcriptionists combine information received throughout the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences to ensure autopsy and external examination reports are complete. This section maintains a secure database for all finalized postmortem reports.
