The Quality Management Section oversees the Crime Laboratory quality assurance program, quality control activities, evidence handling, and laboratory administrative support.
The Quality Management staff develops, implements and maintains a comprehensive quality assurance program that incorporates the quality standards established by the American Society for Crime Laboratory Directors/Laboratory Accreditation Board, the American Board of Forensic Toxicology and the Federal Bureau of Investigation Quality Assurance Standards for Forensic DNA Testing Laboratories. Quality Management works closely with technical staff to ensure that the analytical services provided to customers are of the highest quality, integrity, and reliability.
Quality Management is also responsible for evidence handling and for providing administrative support to the laboratory. A complete and accurate record of evidence chain of custody is maintained for all laboratory casework. Chain of custody is tracked using a computer-based laboratory information management system from the time an item of evidence is received in the laboratory until it is returned to the submitting agency. Laboratory administrative assistants provide clerical support for laboratory operations. In addition, they maintain laboratory records, provide case status information to County prosecutors’ offices and area law enforcement agencies, coordinate post-conviction writs, and process open records requests.
